August (Popeye) Monteiro, 88, of Jackson, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at home. Born in New Bedford, MA, he resided in Whiting, NJ, before moving to Jackson 2 years ago. He was employed as a draftsman by Singer/Kierfott Corp., Elizabeth for 35 years before his retirement.
August proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II during which time he was awarded the Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, and the European Theatre Medal.
He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Elvira Monteiro; and his wife, Maria in 2004. He is survived by his sons, Robert Monteiro and his wife Susan of Manahawkin, and Glenn Monteiro and his Wife Marilyn of Whiting; his daughter, Diane Rubano and her husband Al of Jackson; his randchildren, Matt and Lisa Monteiro, and Michelle and Andrew Rubano; and his 5 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson. A funeral gathering will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at the funeral home. His Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, 43 Madison Ave., Lakewood. Interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 1 Honey Locust Dr., Lakewood.
