Bernardine Duffy, nee Clancy, age 87, died on Friday, May 10, 2013 peacefully in her sleep with family by her side. Born in the Bronx, NY, she was the only child of Carolyn Reilly and Kenneth Clancy. Bernardine married Beauvais (Jack) Duffy in 1951 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and later moved to Point Pleasant Beach in 1957, where they raised their eight children. Her family took great pride in her many achievements in life. A 1947 graduate of Hunter College in New York City, she earned her J.D. at New York University's School of Law in 1950, where she was one of three women in her graduating class. Later, while in her forties, Bernardine returned to school to obtain her second advanced education degree in Library Science and went on to enjoy a fulfilling career at the Brick Branch of the Ocean County Library system, retiring in 2001. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the theater, and loved to travel.
Bernardine was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 1977 and her grandson, Christopher, an Iraq war hero, in 2004. She is survived by her children Sean Duffy and his wife Lynda, Brendan Duffy, Michael Duffy and his wife Joan, Kieran Duffy, Anne Duffy Bayliss and her husband Jay, Maura Duffy Vergari and her husband Antonio, Brian Duffy, and Megan Duffy Appleby and her husband Kevin. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Saint Martha on Herbertsville Road in Point Pleasant. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, 185 Brick Boulevard, Brick, NJ 08724 (www.jerseyshoreanimalshelter.org) would be appreciated. Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home in Point Pleasant Beach was in charge of the arrangements.
