Blanche H. Jones

AGE: 86 • Neptune

Blanche H. Jones, 86, of Neptune, and wife of Neptune native and civil rights activist Ermon K. Jones, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. After moving to Neptune in 1950, Blanche began her 40 year career as an extraordinary educator in the Neptune Township school system, starting out as the first African American elementary school teacher in Neptune, and retiring as the founding Director of the Quality Integrated Education Program (QIE), an innovative magnet school program serving over 2500 students. Holding a Master's Degree in Education from Rutgers University, she was also vice-president of the teachers' union, the first African American holding that position, and was elected to the Neptune Board of Education. Blanche touched the lives of so many young people, and was relentless in passionately pursuing quality education for all. A recipient of numerous awards, including the Sojourner Truth Award, the Ollie C. Porter Gold Medallion, the Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Hometown Hero Award, Blanche was recently honored during Black History Month by Neptune Township and the Mayor with the Trailblazer Award for Paving the Way for Others for her outstanding service as a relentless leader of civil rights. Blanche leaves to cherish her sweet memories her loving husband of 66 years, Ermon; two daughters, Dr. Geneva J. Williams and husband, Otha of Detroit, MI, and Janel J. Jones of Neptune. Surviving also are a sister, Jean Wright of Baltimore, MD; sister and brothers-in-law, Dr. Marion and Gwen West (Florida), Attorney Viron K. Jones (South Carolina), and Mrs. Cornelia Miller (Neptune); three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10 until the funeral services at 12 noon at Second Baptist Church, 124 Atkins Ave., Asbury Park. Reverend William Coleman Jr., Interim Pastor, Second Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Ely Funeral Home, Neptune, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
