Donald McLean Campbell, 94, of Neptune City, passed away at home Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Mr. Campbell was born in 1920 in his grandfather boat pavilion at the foot of 12th Avenue, Belmar. The son of Robert J. Campbell and Victoria A. McLean-Campbell. Mr. Campbell enlisted in the Army one year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor which extended his tour to a total of five years with the 44th Division, 744th ordinance company. serving throughout Europe.
Mr. Campbell returned to Neptune City, after the war to work with his father and later his brother at Campbell's Boat Works. Mr. Campbell became co-owner of the boat works with is Brother Robert Campbell after the death of his father, from which he retired at the age of 70.
Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Loretta Coveney-Campbell and brother, Robert Douglas Campbell. Mr. Campbell is survived by three children, Neil John Campbell, Neptune, Donna L. Campbell, Cape Charles, VA, and Jeanne M. Donahue and her husband Philip Donahue, Neptune City. Mr. Campbell is also survived by three granddaughters Victoria G. Donahue, Kathleen M. Donahue and Jacklyn M. Donahue, all of Neptune City, and many nieces and nephews from the Campbell and Coveney families.
A closed casket viewing will be held from 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Glendola Cemetery, Belmar Boulevard, Glendola-Wall.
