AGE: 94 • Point Pleasant

Eileen M. Cooney, 94, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, in Point Pleasant. Born in New York City, she lived in the Riverdale section of the Bronx before moving to Point Pleasant 25 years ago. Eileen proudly served as a Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps in England and Wales during World War II. She earned her R.N. Degree from St. Vincent's Nursing School and her Master's Degree in French from Columbia University Teacher's College. She was a high school teacher with the New York City School System where she taught nursing. She was a member of the Women's Club of Point Pleasant and was a staunch advocate for the Point Pleasant branch of the Ocean County Library System. In her spare time, she loved to garden and travel, especially her winters in Hawaii.

Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 2001. She is survived by her son and his wife, Edward and Mary Cooney of Rockville, MD; her daughter, Elizabeth Cooney of Larchmont, NY; her daughter, Eileen Leahy of McLean, VA; and her daughter, Patricia Cooney of the Riverdale section of the Bronx. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kevin and Glenn Caldwell, Michael and Lauren Leahy, Edward, James, and Steven Cooney, and Rita McNamara, her devoted caregiver.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 at Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant Beach. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at St. Peter's Church in Point Pleasant Beach, followed by interment at St. Anne's Cemetery in Wall.
