Elmer Morris Slocum, A true son of Ocean Grove, Elmer Slocum spent his 82 years embraced by his beloved town and its people. Surrounded by his friends and family, Elmer passed away peacefully in King Manor on Thursday, September 27, 2013.
Born at Hazzard Hospital (now Monmouth Medical Center), Elmer grew up on Embry Avenue and became an Ocean Grove icon. Participating in over 75 years of parades and events, and providing friendship and security services for all, Elmer was well respected by all whose lives he touched.
During his youth he was the attendant at the boardwalk merry-go-round and along the way he developed great talents playing the harmonica, tap dancing, and playing the spoons. His life centered on Ocean Grove in a town that accepted and loved him. While residing on Mt Tabor Way, Elmer fell in love with the love of his life, his surviving spouse, Linda Erhart. They were married at a block party 16 years ago. He was a loving and caring husband to Linda at all times.
A former Neptune police chief awarded Elmer the Distinct Honor of Special Assistant. Elmer treasured that badge and proudly wore it for the rest of his days. As our special ambassador, Elmer carried his badge and flashlight everywhere. In addition to his other work, Elmer was a proud contributor for many years at Mt Carmel Church in Asbury Park. A significant event in that role was when he and Linda were the honor guard during the wake of Father Albert, which was something many still remember fondly. His twinkling blue eyes, engaging smile and helpful spirit made everyone feel good in his company. Elmer will always be remembered for his generous spirit, by his adherence to the principals of doing right by God and man, and to his life in service to others.
A viewing will take place at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, Oct. 1st, with services at 1:00 pm at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, at 118 Main Ave, Ocean Grove, NJ.
