Engel H. Sprague age 90 of Waretown passed away peacefully on Thursday November 21, 2013 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in Forked River to Clara and George Sprague. Married Fay Bonnell in 1947 and moved to Waretown in 1950. Engle served his country in the U.S. Army 2nd Division (1942-1945). He was in the invasion of Normandy Beach, D-day. He was wounded twice, was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Expert Rifleman Medals for gallantry in action. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans OC Memorial Chapter #24 of NJ. Engle served 24 years as an Ocean Township Committeeman, 9 years as Mayor. He also served on the Ocean Twp Board of Education, the Planning Board, Ocean Twp Municipal Utilities Authority and numerous other committees. In 1950 he formed the partnership Shore Painting Contractors. He became a member of the local 694 Painters, Decorators and Paper Hangers Union of America (1980-1984). Engel also became supervisor of the Voting Machines for Ocean County Board of Elections. He served as chairman of the Waretown Cemetery Assoc. and established the Waretown Historical Society. Engle was a member of the United Methodist Church for 75 years. He served the Waretown United Methodist Church as Lay Leader, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Administrative Board Chairman, Choir member, and Chairman of the Building Committee for the building of the fellowship Hall and Church.
He is predeceased by his daughters, Cheryl Cole and Michele Nogowski, brothers, Evans, Albert, George and sister Thelma. Engle is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Fay, daughters Marlene Teschko (John), Elaine Hoger (Fred), Connie Carey (William) son Scott (companion Kathy Gray) son-in-law Herschel Cole, he is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Sunday November 24, 2013 from 7-9pm at the Riggs Funeral Home 130 North Route 9, Forked River. There will also be a viewing held on Monday from 12 until time of service at 1pm at the Waretown United Methodist Church, 27 Bryant Road, Waretown Interment to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either the Waretown Historical Society, P.O. Box 138 Waretown, 08758 or Waretown United Methodist Church Building Fund, 27 Bryant Road, Waretown, NJ in Engle's memory.
