Eugene "Gene" Casazza

AGE: 87 • Rumson

Eugene "Gene" Casazza, 87, of Rumson, passed away Friday August 29, 2014 at his home. He was born in Brooklyn, NY where he lived before moving to Rumson in 1980. Gene was first a family man. He loved his family and maintaining strong family values was always his first priority. He proudly served our country in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. In 1957, Gene founded and guided his successful family business, Rex-Gene Foods. The food industry recognized the family business as an innovator and a precursor to today's warehouse club format. A local newspaper article about "the man in the cowboy hat" was picked up by the Associated Press, which ran the story nationwide. Channel 9 News also ran a TV story on Gene and his family business. Gene had many good friends in the local area, and much enjoyed his weekly golf and poker games with those friends. He was an active member of the Red Bank "Root Beer Club" and the Fair Haven "Shrewsbury River Yacht Club." Gene was a communicant of Church of the Nativity in Fair Haven.

He is predeceased by his parents, John and Jane Casazza, and son-in-law, Frank LaMattina. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Lucille Esposito Casazza; his loving children, Gene and his wife Marie, Gary and his wife Vivian and his daughter Lisa LaMattina. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Cindy and her husband Andrew, Andrea and her husband Michael, Cristin and her husband Louis, Frank, Michelle, Christopher, Vivian, Lucille, Gina, and Gene; his brothers, Joseph Casazza and his wife Phyllis and John J. Casazza; his sister, Catherine Monid.

A visitation will take place on Tuesday September 2, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday September 3, 2014 at the Church of the Nativity in Fair Haven at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be sent to Eugene Casazza Christian Brothers Academy Scholarship Fund; 850 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738.
