George (Giff) J. Giffin

AGE: 85 • Fair Haven

George J. Giffin (Giff), 85, died at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank on Thursday, May 15, 2014. George and his family have lived in Fair Haven almost 60 years ago.

Giff served as a Captain with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1951 and earned a Master's Degree from Colby as well as from the University of Vermont. He taught biology at Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School, Rumson from 1956-1991 and also served as Chairman of the Science Department. While a teacher at the high school, he was at different times both the girls' and boys' basketball coach as well as the school golf coach. Looking for an opportunity for girls to be more involved in school activities, Giff created and developed the Girls' Rifle Drill team which at one time numbered 100 girls and performed at all football games as well as participating for a number of years in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in NYC.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rumson. He was also a member of the Root Beer and Checkers Club of Red Bank, The Mayflower and Jamestown Societies and The Sons of the American Revolution. Giff was a founder of the Fair Haven Fields Committee and the director of the Fair Haven Recreation Commission for several years.

One of Giff's great interests was ballroom dancing. He enjoyed sharing his love of dance with students in the high school for fun as well as for scholastic credit. He helped prepare many for their wedding day dance. Most recently, he taught 5th and 6th graders ballroom dancing at Knollwood School and had the joy of his grandsons in the classes. He attended with great interest his grandsons' baseball and basketball games when they were in grammar school and now in high school.

Giff is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marcia; son, David R. and wife Yvonne of Houston, TX; daughter, Debra G. and husband Joseph Schluter of Fair Haven and grandsons, Michael and Andrew.
