George R. Oliva

AGE: 98 • Monmouth Beach

George R. Oliva, 98, passed away on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation, Shrewsbury. He entered the Army in 1941 and served with the 805th Tank Destroyers Battalion in North Africa where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. George was honorably discharged in October 1945. He married his loving wife Bertha, who he met in the Army, on April 14th, 1945. After the war, he attended fashion design school at McDowells in New York City and then joined his father's dress manufacturing business in New York City. Upon his retirement in 1975, George moved to Monmouth Beach. He enjoyed boating, fishing, tennis, golf and cruise vacations with his wife. He was a lifetime member of the Cairola- Barber Post 2342 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Fort Lee, NJ.

George was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Bertha; his grandson, John of Monmouth Beach; his brother, Joseph Oliva of Middletown; and his sisters, Catherine Oliva-Dowell and Helen McManus, both of Ft. Lee. Surviving are his sons, George R. Oliva Jr. and his wife, Valerie of Eatontown, and Mark Oliva and his wife Judy of Monmouth Beach; his grandsons, Gregory Oliva of Middletown, Gary Oliva and his wife Rachel of Long Branch, and Matthew Oliva of Monmouth Beach.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at9:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Church of the Precious Blood, 72 Riverdale Ave., Monmouth Beach. Interment will follow at Madonna Cemetery, Fort Lee.
