Gertrude Eleanor Slowinski

AGE: 88 • Princeton

Gertrude Eleanor Slowinski, 88, of Princeton, NJ, died Friday, December 21, 2012 at Princeton University Medical Center in Princeton, surrounded by her loving family. Gertrude was born and raised in West Orange, NJ. She graduated from St. Elizabeth's College in Convent Station, NJ, and was a concert pianist, performing at Town Hall in New York City. For over thirty years, she lived in Caldwell, NJ, where she raised thirteen children and devoted herself with love, caring, and sacrifice for her family. After her children were school age, she became a teacher, real estate broker, and attorney, obtaining her JD degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark. She served for many years as a Deputy Attorney General in Newark, NJ, representing the interests of children on behalf of the Division of Youth & Family Services. Upon her retirement, she lived in Toms River, NJ, for nearly twenty years with her loving husband, Joseph S. Slowinski, also an attorney and former Professor of Law with Seton Hall University School of Law. A devout Catholic, Gertrude was a Eucharistic minister and a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Caldwell, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Toms River, and St. Joseph's Chapel at Morris Hall in Lawrenceville. She resided at St. Mary's Assisted Living at Morris Hall from 2009 to 2012, and had just recently moved to Princeton, in the home of her daughter Anastasia.

Gertrude leaves behind twelve of her children - her sons Joseph, Timothy, Andrew and Matthew, and her daughters Mary, Hedwig, Jane, Regina, Stephanie, Monica, Anastasia, and Rose, as well as twenty-six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers Henry, Thunder and John Haas, and is preceded by her loving husband, Joseph S. Slowinski, who passed May 12, 2008, and her daughter, Cecilia Slowinski, who passed August 31, 2010. For all her knew her, Gertrude's life was a dedicated display of Christ's calling, "To love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. And to love your neighbor as yourself."

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the St. Paul's Church 214 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
