Gregory A. DePaul, 61, of Bayville, passed Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Community Medical Center, Toms River with his loving family by his side. He had circumed to a long courageous battle with cancer. A life-long resident of Bayville, he was an enormously committed and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Greg served as the Superintendent of the Berkeley Sewerage Authority for 43 years. He was the founding Chief of the Berkeley Hazardous Materials Response Team where he severed as the HazMat Team Chief for 22 years from 1990 to present. He was the founding Vice President, past Fire Chief, and 36 year member of the Pinewald Pioneer Fire Company, Bayville, NJ. He was an active Adjunct Instructor for New Jersey State Police Hazardous Materials Training Programs for over 20 years. Additionally, he was a Deputy Coordinator of the Berkeley Township Office of Emergency Management, a founding committee member for the New Jersey Task Force One (NJTF-1) Urban Search and Rescue Team, and past Deputy Fire Warden for the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service. His untiring services earned him a Distinguished Service Medal and Award from the Ocean County Fire Marshal's Office in 2011.
Greg was a musician who enjoyed playing the drums, as well as, camping with his family and friends. Anyone around Greg could easily see his passion for the things he enjoyed. He will be dearly missed and forever loved by his family and friends. Surviving is his loving wife, Candy; daughter, Sherry Dohn and husband George; son, Greg and wife Brenda; grandchildren, Shawn and Alexis Dohn, and Brady and Katelyn DePaul. Also surviving is his sister, Carol Elias, who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, with a Fireman Service at 7:30 p.m. in the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ 08721. Funeral will be held Thursday and relatives and friends may gather 8 a.m. in the funeral home or meet directly at Saint Barnabas Church in Bayville to celebrate a 9 a.m. Funeral Mass. Burial will follow to Bayville Cemetery in Bayville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gregory's name can be made to the Pinewald Fire Company, P.O. Box 195, Bayville, NJ 08721.
