Harold Jay Berk, 94, of Oceanport, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Berk graduated from Red Bank High School where he was the captain of the state championship tennis team for two years. He was named one of the top 10 scholastic tennis players in NJ for the years 1900-1959. Mr. Berk graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the undefeated varsity tennis team which won three consecutive Southern Conference Championships. He served as a Quartermaster during WWII and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Berk worked as a tennis professional at the Colony Surf Club in West End, the Harbor Island Spa in Miami Beach,FL, and at the Deal Casino.
Mr. Berk is predeceased by his brother, Lester Berk, M.D., and his sister, Dorothy Rahn. Mr. Berk is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma; his daughter, Janet Berk, and her husband, Michael Timko, of Holmdel; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Keith, and Caroline; and a nephew, Stephen Rahn.
A chapel service will be held at 11am on Tuesday at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. Interment will follow at B'nai Israel Cemetery, Tinton Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
