Harold Joseph Geary

Harold Joseph Geary died Feb. 10, 2013 at home after a long illness. He was born on August 16, 1926 when Calvin Coolidge was in the White House and gentleman Jimmy Walker was the Mayor of New York. "Harry" grew up in the Washington Heights section of New York. After he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Cullen, they moved to the Jackson Heights section of Queens. When it came time to move to the suburbs, they settled in New Milford, NJ where they remained for 37 years and raised 5 children. In 1998, they relocated to the "Irish Riviera" where they enjoyed 15 golden years of fun and friendship in the stellar community, Four Seasons at Wall. While at Four Seasons, Harry was a member of their Marine Corps League and the Judiciary committee. His charitable work included his St. Denis Parish, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Men for Jesus Christ. Harry also enjoyed bocce and croquet as well as bowling with the "Harry's Angels" team.

Harry was the second son born to Ethel O'Neill and William Geary. At the wee age of 4, Harry joined his older cousins in kindergarten class at Mother Cabrini Primary Division in Manhattan. In 1932 his parents entered both Harry and his brother Billy to Public School 189 resulting in Harry repeating kindergarten thus graduating at the mature age of 6. In February 1936 Harry along with his brother Jack enrolled in the newly established St. Elizabeth parish elementary school in Manhattan. Harry was proud to have been in the school's first graduating class of 1940. Harry treasured his lifelong friendships with classmates Jack Jackman, Werner Frank, and Dr. Joseph McDonald along with many ABC network friends.

On August 9, 1944 Harry joined the Marines and served in WWII until he was discharged on August 31, 1946. While in the marines Harry had the distinction of being selected for the V12 Officers Program. Harry spent two years at Princeton University to pursue this program and ultimately came home and graduated NYU in 1950 with a Bachelors degree in both Business and economics. Following graduation, Harry worked his entire career at American Broadcasting Company in Manhattan. He started in the mailroom and climbed the ranks to the position of Director of Nighttime Sales. Harry chose early retirement in April 1986 after 36 years of service.

Harry is predeceased by his parents, his sister-in-law Catherine Burke Geary and his niece Mary Beth McLaughlin. His brother Dr. John Geary died from cancer October 8, 2006. Harry is survived by his wife of 58 years and his five (5) children and three (3) grandchildren. Eldest son, Tom, resides at Four Seasons at Wall. Dr. Jim Geary resides in Manchester, NH with his wife Valerie and daughter Allison. Richard Geary resides in Warwick, NY with daughters Bridget and Kristen. John Geary resides in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Youngest of the clan and his only daughter, Mary Geary and husband Michael reside in Naples, FL.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation Feb. 14 from 3-7 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am Friday February 15 at St. Martha's Church, 3800 Herbertsville Rd. Pt. Pleasant, N.J. 732-295-3630. Interment will be private at Brig Gen William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Breadline at www.stfrancisbreadline.org or , 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105.
