James F. Higgins, Jr.

AGE: 83 • Wall Township

James Francis Higgins, Jr., 83, of Wall Township, N.J., formerly of Spring Lake, N.J., passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Born December 1, 1930, he was an alumnus of St. Francis of Rome, and All Hallows High School, both in the Bronx, N.Y., and Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y.. He joined the Air Force Cadets and served his counrty in the United States Air Force following his graduation from college.

On April 7, 1956, he married Marilyn Frances McGee, also of the Bronx, N.Y. He and his wife settled in Spring Lake, N.J. in 1962, after outgrowing their first home in Middletown, N.J. He was a fixture on the front porch of 8 Salem Avenue, remembered and sought out by numerous neighbors and easily recognized and recalled by friends and strangers alike. He co-founded the Spring Lake-Spring Lake Heights Soccer League.

He was an avid reader of all books on World War II and a self-taught Winston Churchill scholar. He loved to dance to the Big Band sound and won many a coveted competition in the Bronx with his dance partner, Marilyn.

Mr. Higgins retired from management in the marketing department of New York Telephone after over thirty years of service, which included assignments with AT&T and Western Electric.

He was predeceased by his parents, James Francis Higgins, Sr., and Mary Catherine Haggerty Higgins.

Mr. Higgins is survived by Marilyn, his beloved wife of 58 years, and their six children: Sean and Patricia Higgins of Moorestown, N.J.; Brendan and Susan Higgins of Wall Township, N.J.; Mary Elizabeth and Peter Spaeth of Wall Township, N.J.; Colleen Mary Higgins of Providence, Rhode Island; Kieran and Eileen Higgins of Fair Haven, N.J. and Maureen and Mark Williams of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren: Sean, Eamonn, Colin, Kelsey, Jack, Samantha, Rebecca, Peter, Madeline, Kevin and Clare; and his great-grandson, Finn.

Visitation will take place at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall Township, on Sunday, July 20, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine's Church, Spring Lake, on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., followed by interment at St. Catharine's Cemetery.
