James John Pollock, of Avon, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. James retired as a Battalion Chief in the Jersey City Fire Department in 1997. Prior to becoming a fireman, James worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Teamsters Union. James was a Marine Corps veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was born in Jersey City and lived in Kearny before moving to Avon in 1979. From a very young age, James was a hardworking compassionate person who always put the needs of others in front of his own and took great care of his family. He was a fixture on the Avon Boardwalk and loved his daily swims in the Avon pool every summer.

James is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Eileen (Behrens) Pollock; his beloved children, Jacqueline Pollock McCaffrey and her husband James of New York City and Avon, Eileen Pollock Martin and her husband Steve of Somerset, James John Pollock of Asbury Park, and Brian J. Pollock and his wife Alexis of Manasquan. His cherished grandchildren, Thomas, Michaela and Rhianna Pollock, Matthew and Natalie Martin and Liam and Sidney Pollock. He will be dearly missed by his 3 surviving siblings, Agnes Cassely and Kathleen Pollock and Joseph Pollock

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday Jan. 9 at Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Route 33, Neptune. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10 at the Church of Saint Elizabeth, 424 Lincoln Ave., Avon. Committal will follow at Saint Anne's Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Avon Police Association, 301 Main St., Avon or the Avon First Aid Squad, PO Box 7, Avon, NJ 07717 would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Reilly-Bonner Funeral Home, Belmar.
