Joaquin A. Portuondo, 85, a 50 year resident of Little Silver, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. Joaquin was born in Havana, Cuba to Alberto and Caridad Castillo Portuondo. He and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1960 from Cuba. Joaquin earned a law degree in Cuba and then received his Master's degree from Rutgers University and did his graduate studies at NYU. He was a professor of Spanish Language and Literature and Chairman of the Foreign Language Dept. at Kean University for 40 years, until his retirement in 2007. He was a longtime communicant of Church of the Nativity in Fair Haven.
He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by Alicia, his loving wife of 60 years; his daughter, Alicia and her husband, Bob; and his grandchildren, Catina and Bryan.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 19 at Church of the Nativity on Hance Rd., Fair Haven. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joaquin's memory to the
