John (Jack) Grant McGill

AGE: 69 • Fort Monmouth

John (Jack) Grant McGill, 69, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, with his wife by his side, after a ten month courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Cohoes, NY on May 15, 1944 and upon graduation from high school, he attended Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology. He was also commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and then began a 25 year career in the U.S. Army where he had many assignments which included: Greece, Turkey, Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ, Navajo Army Depot, Flagstaff, AZ, and various other posts before moving to Ft. Monmouth. He retired from the Army in 1994.

He earned his M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson College and was awarded a Master of Science in Contract and Acquisition Management from Florida Institute of Technology. He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and various other awards and decorations. Upon retirement, he worked in the defense industry. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, AUSA, and the IRA. Foremost in Jack's life and his main focal point was his family. Jack was involved in coaching his daughters at soccer and Special Olympics Track and Field Events.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ann and John McGill of Cohoes, NY. Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years, Sheryl Wilbert McGill; and his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jennifer McGill of Dover, DE, Kelle' and Matthew Kasky of Springfield, VA, and Erin and John Gilliam of Alexandria, VA; his six precious grandchildren, Emily, Lauren, Andrew, Olivia Kasky and John and Virginia Gilliam. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy of Troy, NY; and his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Karen McGill of Cincinatti, OH, as well as his mother-in-law, Virginia Wilbert of Fair Haven. Numerous loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends also survive him.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 am. Saturday Aug. 10, 2013 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in West End. Burial with Military Funeral Honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
