John J. Bogan III, 79, of Brielle, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013. John Joseph Bogan III was born in Jersey City and was raised in Point Pleasant Beach and Brielle. He was a graduate of St. Rose High School in Belmar and the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He spent 2 ½ years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force before joining the family business, Bogan's Brielle Basin as a fishing boat captain. He was captain of the Paramount fishing boat for over 20 years. In 1979, he opened Brielle Bait and Tackle Store and continued to work there along with his sons and a daughter for many years.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Settembre Bogan; his parents, John Jr. and Lillian Bogan; a brother, Michael Bogan; and an infant son, Richard Bogan. John is survived by his children and their spouses, Catherine and Mark Mantlick of Brielle, John IV and Kathleen Bogan of Pt. Pleasant, Suzanne and Christopher Dunn of Crownsville, MD, and Gregory and Myong Bogan of Pt. Pleasant. He is also survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Claire Bogan, Thomas and Marilyn Bogan, David and Barbara Bogan, and Joseph and Jean Bogan; and by two sisters-in-law, Madeline Walsh and Suzanne Campion. Also surviving are John's nine grandchildren, Stephanie and her husband Matthew White, Denise Bogan, Mark Mantlick, Diane Mantlick, Christopher Mantlick, Tricia Bogan, John Bogan V, Gabrielle Dunn, and Carolyn Dunn, and his one great-grandchild, Benjamin White, as well as many nieces and nephews.
John's family would like to acknowledge Mr. Baffour Yamoah for the excellent care he provided over the past two years, and a thank you to Meridian Hospice Care Services.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 21 at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 22 at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Burial to follow in St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall.
