Joseph L. Picone, 88, of Lakewood, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in New York City, he lived in Brick for 40 years prior to moving to Lakewood 8 years ago. He worked as an inspector for the State of New Jersey Department of Transportation in Trenton for over 30 years before his retirement in 1986. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Joseph was a former member of the American Legion in Cliffside Park. He was a Special Police Officer in Brick, and was one of the original police dispatchers for the Brick Police Department. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic's Church, Brick. His interests included bus trips to destinations known and unknown. He particularly enjoyed his Thursday bus trip to Atlantic City. Joseph also enjoyed gardening, basketball, exercising and horse racing.
Joseph was predeceased by his brother, Salvatore Picone; and two sisters, Anna Sacheli and Mary Destri. Surviving are his wife, Gabriella (Russo) Picone; one son, Robert Picone of Brick; one daughter, Donna Marie Czujko and her husband Andrew of Sea Bright; two grandchildren, Joseph and Michele who were the love of his life, and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013 at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick. A funeral liturgy will be offered at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 14 at St. Dominic's Church, Brick, followed by entombment at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
