Lawrence Scott

AGE: 86 • East Windsor

Lawrence Scott, 86, East Windsor, NJ., passed away on March 10, 2014. He was born in Teaneck, NJ., to the late Lillian Wilson and William Scott. He was raised in Englewood, NJ., and joined ROTC during high school. After graduating high school, he went to New York University where he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Larry served as a Captain in the U.S. Army while training at Fort Monmouth from 1940-1982. He is honored at Camp Evans WWII Museum and National Historic Landmark as a Black American Contributor to Electronic Research Development, Production, and Distribution. He often traveled to Georgia Tech University and other educational and governmental facilities due to his knowledge and expertise. Lawrence served in three wars and was a M-1 Rifle expert who received an Army of Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and an European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, he continued working for the government as an Electrical Engineer for over 45 years at the EW LAB, Electronic Warfare LAB, Fort Monmouth Recon and Surveillance, 1-2/ WD and the McAfee Center, Intelligence Information and Warfare Directorate. He maintained every possible top secret government clearance. He was the cousin of Coretta Scott-King, wife of Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Scott and Lillian Wilson Scott, two brothers, William and Vance Scott, a cousin Coretta Scott-King, and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Jilon Scott. He leaves to cherish his memories, two sons, Lawrence Andrew Scott, Asbury Park, NJ, and William Scott, East Windsor, NJ, five granddaughters and seven great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held for Mr. Scott from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Tinton Falls, NJ. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Robert J. Perkins will officiate. Interment will be held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, NJ. Childs Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.
