Louis E. Forest, age 90, of Wall Township, N.J. died peacefully on Friday, May 9 surrounded by his family. Lou was born on August, 12, 1923 in North Dighton, MA, the son of Joseph A. Forest and Josephine Martell Forest, and grew up in Lynn, MA. Lou, as he was known to all, was a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Master of many classes of ships including Victory, Challenger, Mariner and various Container ships. He had a 42-year career in the Merchant Marine for the United States Lines predominately as the Captain of the ship (1943 to 1985). He served honorably during three U.S. wars. As a member of the Greatest Generation, Lou served on a troop ship during World War II. During the Korean conflict and Vietnam War his ships were placed under the United States Navy Sea Lift Command. Lou was guided by his love for his family, his faith, and his country. As such, he was a member of the Boston Marine Society, Master Mariners Guild, National Maritime Historical Society, the U.S. Navel Institute, and the Masters Mates and Pilots Association. He was a former Eucharistic Minister at Jersey Shore Hospital and St. Denis Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Lou is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Esther Marie (de Castro), his sister Marie Janet Dawson of Peabody MA, his brothers-in-law John (Jack) de Castro, of Manasquan, N.J.; Peter and his wife Gail of Georgetown, KY; and James and his wife Annie, of Northfield, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, May 14 2014 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 am Thursday, May 15, 2014 at St. Denis Catholic Church, 90 Union Avenue, Manasquan, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you do a random act of kindness in Lou's memory.
