Marie Esther Barillo (formerly Rienzo), 89, died on July 3, 2014 after a long illness. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and was the daughter of the late Anthony and Madeline Rienzo. Marie graduated from Snyder High School where she was a member of the school paper and recipient of the class scholarship. She graduated from Montclair University, where she was editor in chief of the school paper and member of Kappa Delta Pi. Marie began a career in Ramsey, NJ.
After marriage to Joseph Barillo in 1951, she resided in Glen Rock, NJ for 41 years. Marie was a highly respected educator who taught in Glen Rock High School. She was a special education expert and in 1977 was the recipient of the prestigious Princeton University Prize for distinguished teaching in a Secondary School of NJ.
She served as Parish Council president at St. Catherine Church in Glen Rock, NJ, where she was a Eucharistic minister for 35 years, and Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Glen Rock. She spent 28 years as a winter resident of Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida and summers in Ocean Township, NJ, attending Saint Anselm church while presiding as a Eucharistic Minister.
Upon retiring from the Glen Rock HS staff, she returned to graduate school, earned an MS degree in pastoral counseling and began a second career in a psychotherapy practice until her retirement to age 70. She loved to cook, entertain friends and family. Marie did The New York Times crossword in ink every morning at breakfast. She was an intensely loving human being who changed the lives of many people. After becoming a therapist, she counseled many people suffering from serious drug and alcohol addictions. They never forgot her. Her compassion was limitless.
Marie was predeceased by her brother Frank Rienzo, M.D., niece Elsa Walters Rienzo, nephews Chris and Patrick Vertino. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Col. Joseph Barillo, USA retired; her three children, Col. David Barillo, M.D. of Charleston, SC; Madeline Barillo Flagg of Trumbull, CT; John Barillo of Indianapolis, IN.; her brother, Albert Rienzo, M.D. and his wife Alia; her sister, Grace Rienzo Vertino; and eight grandchildren: Alexandra and Victoria Flagg; Nathan, Anthony and Catherine Barillo; Madeline, Suzanne and Cooper Barillo.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 9 from 2-4 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave., (corner of Third Ave.), Long Branch. A Mass will be celebrated on Thursday July 10 at 11 am at St. Anselm's R.C. Church, 1028 Wayside Road, Wayside. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the
