Martha (Marty) Jeanne Behrens, 82, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ of complications related to recent surgery. Martha grew up in rural Michigan, attended a one room school with her brother and two sisters, graduated from Central High School in Grand Rapids, MI, and attended Michigan State University where she majored in Nursing. Martha's love for life lead her in several different directions. After marrying her Sigma Chi sweetheart from Michigan State, Robert P. Behrens the couple moved to Cranford, NJ and raised two children, Robert P. Behrens Jr. and Barbara Jeanne Behrens. Martha taught Nursery school at the Helen Klase Baldwin School in Cranford, cake decorating in the Cranford Adult education program and provided Meals on Wheels services for those in need for many years. After retiring to Leisure Village West in Manchester, NJ during the early 1980s Martha and her husband Robert remained active traveling to her beloved Bermuda a total of 50 times. She was active in the Westernaires, a local choral group performing in numerous concerts, a weekly youth enrichment program, where she and other women provided meals for a church sponsored program and her Red Hat Snappers, a group that she founded that met monthly for lunch outings. Martha moved to Crestwood Manor in Whiting after the passing of her husband and had been thriving in the community until her recent passing. She was active on the Dining Room Committee, the Crafts group and enjoyed playing Bingo, something that she had only been introduced to once she became 80.
Martha is survived by her sisters, Mary Tomlinson, Betty Shelhorse; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert P. Behrens Jr. and Laura P. Behrens and her granddaughter, Abigail M. Behrens of Murrells Inlet, SC, and her daughter, Barbara J. Behrens of Hamilton Square, NJ.
In lieu of a memorial service or flowers, Martha donated herself to science and has requested that any donations be made to the Mercer County Community College, MCCC Foundation PTA Scholarship Fund, PO Box 17202, Trenton, NJ 08690.
