Raymond A Mills

AGE: 92 • Manchester

Raymond Armistice Mills 92, of Leisure Knoll, Manchester died Wednesday, January 1, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was employed for 12 years as a Fireman for the City of New York, Engine #39, Squad # 5, Manhattan, before retiring in 1963. Prior to that, he served the City of New York as a police officer. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Council #10022, in Leisure Knoll and was a Life Member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, John D. McMahon Assembly serving as Commander of its Color Corps for 3 years. He belonged to the Hump Pilots Association. He was an active parishioner at St John's Church, Lakehurst. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in China, India, and Burma attaining the rank of Tech Sgt. and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Oak Leaf Cluster among his many decorations. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he lived there, and in Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan, Bridgewater, and in Goose Creek, SC before moving to Manchester in 1996. He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Jeanette Curry Mills, who passed away in 2008. Surviving are 3 daughters and a son in law, Mary Ann Tarala of Pt. Pleasant, Regina M. Vuocolo of Easton, PA, Elizabeth Garetano and her husband, Richard of Caldwell, a son, Thomas A Mills. and his wife, Susan of Easton, PA, 9 grandchildren Michael Mary and Stephen Bohacik, Megan and Michael Vuocolo, Zachary, Anna, and Catherine Mills, Richard and Rory Garetano, and a great-grandson, Matthew Holmes. Also surviving his beloved cousins in Ireland, the Connaughton family, and beloved friends, Dr. Carl and Joanne Lepis, Dr. Angelo Chinnici , and Katie Marvin. Visitation is Sunday from 1-5 pm at the Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester. Funeral Liturgy will be Monday at 10:00 am at St John's Church, Lakehurst with entombment to follow at St Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood.
