AGE: 82 • Toms River

Richard Gulya,82, of Holiday Heights section of Berkeley Twsp. Toms River, NJ passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 15, 2014. He was surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with lung cancer.

Richard was born and raised in Edison, NJ and attended Perth Amboy High School where he played football. He then moved to Toms River, NJ 11 years ago from Union, NJ.

He was a member of the Polish American Club of Toms River, NJ and the Holiday Heights Social Club. His passion was dancing especially Polka dancing.

Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the VFW in Hopelawn, NJ. Working as a carpenter, he was a member of The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in Edison, NJ Local #254.

He was predeceased by his parents George and Julia Gulya, his late wife Edwina Gulya, his son Timothy and 2 brothers Bill and Joe Gulya.

Surviving are his wife Helen Gulya of 25 years; son Richard Stanley Gulya and his wife Michelle of Jackson, NJ; Stepdaughter Jennifer Moss and her husband Darrell of Marlboro, NJ; 4 grandchildren Cassie, Matthew, Valerie and Julia; one great grandchild on the way; a sister Helene Rimar and her husband Steve of Boynton Beach, FL; a brother John Gulya of Boca Raton, Fl.

Family will receive friends on Sunday July 20, 2014 from 2-6pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday July 21, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church in Toms River, NJ. Burial will follow to Hazel Wood Cemetery in Colonia, NJ.
