Deacon Robert Gooden Sr, 82, of Whiting, died Friday, February 14th at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Providence, RI, he lived in the Bronx, NYC, Jackson and Lakehurst, before moving to Whiting in 1996. He served honorably in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. Afterwards, he worked for Industrial Washing Machine as a purchasing agent. In 2000, he was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Trenton and ministered out of St. John's Church, Lakehurst. He worked as a bereavement counselor and taught CCD classes at St. John's. He was also a member of the Jackson Lion's Club and the Jackson Auxiliary Police Force. Deacon Bob was predeceased by his 3 brothers, George, John, and William; and 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Mary. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marie V ; his son Robert Jr and wife Fran of South Toms River; his 3 daughters, Patricia and husband Vincent Downey of Cape May, Jo-Ann and husband Frank Rocchino of Whiting, and Mary B and husband Max Vargas of Toms River; 6 grandchildren, April, Joseph, Nicholas, Christina, Paul Robert and Grace; 5 step- grandchildren, Francine Carle, Tracey Ballard, Charles and Jason Hrusovsky; 5 great grandchildren, Donovan, Michaela, Marilyn, Anson and Ariana; and 4 step great grandchildren, Kashonda, Francesca, Ryan, and Samantha. Visitation is 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday at Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester 08759, and 9:30 to 11 AM Thursday at St. John's Church, Lakehurst. Funeral Liturgy will follow at 11 AM with the burial to occur at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River.
