Robert M. Barden Jr., age 92, of Toms River, passed away Friday, February 1, 2013. Born in Tarboro, NC, he lived in Bayville before moving to Toms River in 1983.He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Geology degree and was a member of the Sigma Gamma Epsiom Fraternity. He served in the US Army during WWII as a Topographical Engineer. Served in England, Germany and France where he met his wife Genevieve and was married in November of 1945. He worked for Montgomery Ward before opening his own furniture store in Flemington, 1949 to 1963. While in Flemington he was president of the Lions Club and Commander of the American Legion post 159. Upon moving to Bayville in 1963 Robert was the Owner/Proprietor of the Friendly Furniture Company, later becoming the Lakeside Furniture Co. In Bayville he was the first president of the Beachwood Berkeley Rotary Club. He also served for 16 years on the Berkeley Planning Board. Upon his retirement he worked briefly for several local real estate companies. He was also an active member of the Ocean County Antique Automobile Club.
Robert was predeceased by his wife Genevieve Houriet Barden in 2003. Surviving are his son Robert and his wife Priscilla of Bayville, three daughters, Loys Allabaugh and her husband Scott of Bear, Delaware, Kim Ayres of Los Angeles, CA, and Mimi Corbett and her husband Edward of Toms River. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
