Robert Randolph White, 87, of Brick passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at Brandywine Assisted Living at Reflections in Brick. Mr. White was a steamfitter with the Steamfitters Union, Local 475 in Newark. At the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served his country during World War II as a machinist's mate on the DE-143 USS Fiske. On August 2, 1944, the Fiske was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic. Bob survived but many of his shipmates lost their lives. Bob also served on the LSV-3 USS Osage. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of South Plainfield, Brick Presbyterian Church and the Atlas Pythagoras Masonic Lodge. Bob was very involved at South Plainfield Baptist Church, serving as head trustee, deacon, Sunday school teacher and volunteer caretaker of the church cemetery. Born in Glen Ridge, Bob was raised in Irvington. After WWII, he and his family resided in South Plainfield, while maintaining a summer residence in Brick. They moved to Brick permanently in 1979.
Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph and Geneva White; sisters, Arlyne (White) Clark, Constance (White) Guthreau, Lois (White) Carbone. Surviving are his children, Fred and Carol (White) Thomas of Cincinnati, OH, Robert and Susan (White) Towlen of Brick, Robert and Bonnie White of Blacksburg, VA and Henry and Jeri Lee (White) Pavenski of Hillsborough; grandchildren, Kevin Thomas and his wife Maria, Eric Thomas, Danielle Thomas, Tim Towlen and his wife Kellie, Tracey Towlen Podolsky and her husband Chris, Jeff Towlen, Taylor (White) Cupp and her husband Kevin, Robert "Mac" White, Amber Pavenski, Breana Pavenski and Trevor Pavenski; great grandchildren, Zachary, Lauren and Matthew Towlen, Cole Podolsky, Gabriel and Luke Thomas; a sister-in-law, Mildred Adams; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be on Sunday from 2-6pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. The service will be held on Monday 10am in the funeral home.
