AGE: 88 • Forked River

Rocco R. Rafaniello, 88, of Forked River, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014. Rocco was born in Brooklyn, NY and resided on Staten Island from 1963 until he moved to Forked River in 1986. He was a school teacher for the NYC Board of Education for over 30 years. Rocco served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a communicant of St. Pius X Church and member of the Fr. Capodanno Council Knights of Columbus.

Rocco was predeceased by his wife, Frances T. Rizzo in 2010. He is survived by 4 sons, Ralph (Georganna) of Cornelius, NC, Anthony (Dale) of Howell, William (Leslie) of Saratoga Springs, NY & John (Jenny) of Old Bridge; 2 daughters, Kathryn (Mark) Nichols of Las Vegas, NV & Frances (Vito) Smurro of Wall; brother, Anthony (Jeanne) of Staten Island; 16 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren.

Rocco was a loving and caring husband and father. He was an active and respected member of the community throughout his life. His numerous students affectionately referred to him as "Mr. Raf" and his impact in their defining years was immeasurable. Rocco was an avid fan of the NY Yankees for over 75 years. In his later years, Bingo was his joy, second only to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 at the Growney Funeral Home, 1022 Lacey Road, Forked River. Mass of Christian Burial 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 17 at St. Pius X Church, 300 Lacey Road, Forked River. Interment with Military Honors at the BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Jersey Special Olympics or Cancer Research Institute.
