Thomas F. Heaney Jr. Obituary
Thomas F. Heaney Jr.

Sea Girt

Thomas F. Heaney Jr., of Sea Girt, passed away quietly at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013. Born in Bayonne, Mr. Heaney proudly called it home until moving to Spring Lake and finally settling in Sea Girt in 1978. Tom started his rigorous workout routine at the Bayonne YMCA and could beat the best at handball on the public courts. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, where he gallantly participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy Beach. He attended Purdue University School of Engineering and St. John's Law School of Brooklyn, NY and was admitted to the Bar in 1952. Tom enjoyed a very successful law career with partners, Carton, Nary, Witt, Arvanitis & Bariscillo. One of his proudest accomplishments was receiving the James J. McLaughlin, Esq. Professional Award. This award is presented for demonstrating civility, legal competence, and professionalism in the practice of law. Tom will always be admired and honored by his peers, as well as younger attorneys, for his acute knowledge of law, his discipline, work ethic, and his charisma, as he charmed jurors, winning cases through his knowledge, sincerity, wit, and "disarmingly beautiful blue eyes." He would laughingly claim various notable wins in court, such as representing chimpanzee, "Mr. Jiggs." His memory will always be cherished by everyone who knew him, and dearly by those who loved him, especially "his beloved companion" of over 33 years, Sally Jean Schuren, and his dear deceased sister Catherine's children, Cathy and Tommy Puszcz; his sister-in-law, Louise Heaney, and his deceased brother Joseph's children, Julia, Diane, Joseph Jr., William, Linda, Patrick (deceased), Michael, and Timothy. He will also be remembered by his long time secretary, Lillian Cusack.

Visitation will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 and from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27 at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28 at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake. Interment will be at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory may be made to the charitable organization of one's choice. For more information or to send condolences, visit
