William was born Dec. 11, 1924 in Newark and had lived in Union until the age of 8 and then lived in Maplewood until he was 24 years old. On April 2, 1949, William married his wife Catherine and they lived in Irvington until 1961 when they moved to Brielle. William was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Corps and he was discharged in 1946. He was a real estate appraiser and tax assessor for 6 municipalities. Five of those in Monmouth County, Belmar, Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Manasquan and Brielle. The other municipality was Mantoloking which is in Ocean County. He was an avid golfer, shooting his age at 69 and until his sickness at age 82. He was known by all, that pound for pound he could hit a golf ball further than most. He was also quite a baseball pitcher. After his discharge from the Air Corps, he pitched for the VFW. One sportswriter, Own Keefe said his fastball was like an aspirin tablet coming to the plate. He pitched one ho hitter and climaxed his career by pitching the semi-pro team the Maplewood Maples to the Championship in 1948.
