William E. Burnet IX, "Bill", age 90, of Beach Haven Park, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 30, 2014 at Southern Ocean Medical Center, Manahawkin. A loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather, he was born in Springfield (Delaware County) PA on August 7, 1923. Bill attended Springfield Township Schools, and graduated in 1941. He attended Princeton University and then enlisted in the Navel Reserves in 1942, where he became an electronics technician during WWII. He returned to Princeton in 1946, graduating in 1947 with his BSEE degree. He went to work for The Bell Telephone Company of PA and retired as an electrical engineer in October of 1979. He then joined the Boenning & Scattergood, Inc. investment firm as an Account Executive, retiring in 2004. After many years of part-time LBI living, Bill and his wife "Mare" moved into their Cape Code home as full-time residents in 1996. Mr. Burnet was the Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 3 and was a member of the Benjamin Franklin Consistory and a member of Sextant Lodge No. 286. He was an amateur radio operator (W3UFW) since 1952 and received his First Class Commercial radio license in 1948. Bill was active in the Beach Haven Park Association, Beach Haven Park Yacht Club and the Kynett Methodist Church, all of Long Beach Island.
Bill's life became fulfilled when he met and married the love of his life Maryann (nee Baldwin) in 1951, and they have two children - Joanne "Jody" Betz of Havertown, PA, and William E. Burnet X and his wife Joan of Apex, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren - William E. Burnet XI, Kevin James Burnet, Kathryn Jean Burnet, Christopher William Betz and his wife Sonya, Gregory Kenneth Betz, and Timothy Randolph Betz and his wife Gail.
A viewing and celebration of Bill's life will be held on Thursday April 3, 2014, from 5 - 7 pm followed by a Masonic Service at 7 pm at the Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 1119 Long Beach Blvd., corner of 12th Street, Ship Bottom, NJ 08008. A Memorial service honoring Bill will be held on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Kynett United Methodist Church of Beach Haven, 127 Center Street and Beach Avenue, Beach Haven, followed by interment of cremated remains and full Naval Honors at Holy Innocent's Memorial Garden, Beach Haven.
