AGE: 90 • Beach Haven Park

William E. Burnet IX, "Bill", age 90, of Beach Haven Park, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 30, 2014 at Southern Ocean Medical Center, Manahawkin. A loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather, he was born in Springfield (Delaware County) PA on August 7, 1923. Bill attended Springfield Township Schools, and graduated in 1941. He attended Princeton University and then enlisted in the Navel Reserves in 1942, where he became an electronics technician during WWII. He returned to Princeton in 1946, graduating in 1947 with his BSEE Degree. While at Princeton University, he would get to know Albert Einstein, just as the first William E. Burnet had known and been tutored by Sir Isaac Newton. He went to work for The Bell Telephone of PA and retired as an electrical engineer in October of 1979. He then joined the Boenning & Scattergood Inc. investment firm as an Account Executive and retired in 2004. Bill was a descendant (the ninth in succession) of a British civil servant who was appointed the Governor of New Jersey and New York, a position which he held from 1720 to 1728. He was William E. Burnet I (the first WEB!). Many of his ancestors were witness to and architects of many events that shaped our State and our Nation. Bill's father William E Burnet VIII, contracted and built what is said to be the first Cape Cod style home on LBI. After many years of part-time LBI living, Bill and his wife "Mare" moved into this Cape Code house as full time residents in 1996. Mr. Burnet was the Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 3 and was a member of the Benjamin Franklin Consistory and a member of Sextant Lodge No. 286. He was a ham radio operator (W3UFW) since 1952 and received his FCC First Class Commercial Radio license in 1948. Bill was active in the Beach Haven Park Association, Beach Haven Park Yacht Club and the Kynett Methodist Church, all of Long Beach Island. Bill's life became fulfilled when he met and married the love of his life Maryann (nee Baldwin) in 1951, and they have two children - Joanne "Jody" Betz of Havertown, PA, and William E. Burnet X and his wife Joan of Apex, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren - William E. Burnet XI, Kevin James Burnet, Kathryn Jean Burnet, Christopher William Betz and his wife Sonya, Gregory Kenneth Betz, and Timothy Randolph Betz and his wife Gail. A viewing and celebration of Bill's life will be held on Thursday April 3, 2014, from 5 - 7 pm followed by a Masonic Service at 7 pm at the Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 1119 Long Beach Blvd., corner of 12th Street, Ship Bottom, NJ 08008.
