Willis I. (BUB) Applegate, 88, of Manchester Twp., NJ, formerly of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on March 13, 2013, at Atlantic Coast Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Lakewood. Willis was born in Southard, now Howell, NJ. Willis was co-owner of Willis Applegate and Sons Mason Contractors, Lakewood, for 45 years. He also worked as a security guard at Pine Park, Lakewood, for 10 years. Willis was a member of Lakewood Black Hawks since 1950, serving as the treasurer for 40 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 166, Lakewood; Lakewood High School Alumni Association; and the American Field Service, having hosted a foreign exchange student from New Zealand in 1966-1967. He also served as an umpire for the Lakewood Little League for over 20 years. Willis was an avid golfer, cake baker and an excellent cook. Willis was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Lakewood. Willis was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. He received the following medals: European Theater Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. During his service, Willis served aboard the SS GEORGE H. THOMAS, the SS ROBERT LUCKENBACH, the SS EDMUND MALLET, the SS SEA FLIER and the SS TOLOWA. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard, World War II Veterans, South Pinelands Unit.
Willis was predeceased by his Parents, Willis and Linda Mae Applegate; and his Brother, Donald Applegate. He is survived by his Wife of 66 years, Elsie Mae Applegate; a Daughter, Barbara A. Hicks of Columbia, SC; a Son, Colonel William Robert Applegate, U.S. Army retired of Carlisle, PA; a Brother, Harold James Applegate, of Mechanicsburg, PA; a Sister Evelyn A.Thiebault, of Lakewood, NJ; and 2 Grandchildren, Melissa and Christian Scardaville.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation on Friday, March 22, 2013, from 3-7 PM at the GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527 (732-364-6808). The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 213 Madison Ave., Lakewood, NJ. Kindly meet at the church at 10:45 AM. Military Honors will follow the funeral service. Private interment will take place on Monday, March 25, 2013, at The Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Rd., Arneytown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church in memory of Mr. Applegate.
