Gehrls, Bruce Robert
age 66 years of Chandler, Passed away Peacefully on December 12, 2012 after a 6 year journey with cancer in the loving arms of his wife Barbara and many friends by his side. Bruce was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 12, 1946 to Harry and Velora (Weinbeck) Gehrls. Bruce grew up on his family farm in Lowden, Iowa, graduated in 1964 from Lowden High School and attended the University of Iowa. In 1966 he enlisted in the Air Force and served 2 tours in Vietnam with the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, DaNang Air Base from May 1, 1967 through December 1, 1968. He was awarded many commendation medals and awards for his service in the Southeast Asia mission. He was discharged from Williams Air Force Base in Arizona and it was then he decided that he would make his home in Arizona. He was an MCSO Deputy for a few years and then he drove a Big Rig cross country. After that he went to work for the city of Chandler in the Building Department and retired after 24 years. He was preceded in death by his son Jonathan, his parents, sister-in-law Mary Niebuhr, and brother-in-law Bob Duncan. He is survived by his wife Barbara, sister Susan (Richard) Ritterpusch, sister-in-law Ruth Duncan, brother-in-law Charles Raths (Sondra), brother-in-law Robert Niebuhr, nieces and nephews, Michele, Melissa, Christine, Jessica, Derek, Zachary, Ehren, Tyler and many other family and friends. The Celebration of life for Bruce will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 739 W. Erie St., Chandler, Arizona, with a gathering of family and friends 1 hour prior to the celebration at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Bruce Gehrls would be appreciated to the Troops First c/o WMFFC, 1536 E. Knox Road, Tempe, AZ., 85284, or , Chandler, AZ. There will be an interment in Lowden, Iowa at a later date.
