88, Scottsdale, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Vi at Grayhawk following a long illness. Born in Portland, Maine on October 9, 1924, daughter of Edwin F. and Mabelle R. Manchester, and graduated from Deering High School in Portland. An enthusiastic Wolverine, she graduated from University of Michigan in 1946 with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. She later obtained her Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ms. Manchester began her career as a Financial Analyst, leaving to work as an Insurance Underwriter. Eventually she worked in the City Planning Office of Portland until joining Fairfax County, VA as an Urban Planner. She was a member of St. Barnabas of the Desert Church and ECW. She enjoyed Community Theater, The Phoenix Symphony, genealogy research, and political and civic activities. Ms. Manchester was former President of the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C. Other memberships include Young Republicans (former Vice-Chair and Chair), AAUW (1962), GMRWC (McLean, VA), AICP, Palo Verde Republican Women (Scottsdale), Grand Canyon Chapter DAR (Scottsdale), and Zonta Club of the East Valley (1978). An avid traveler, she visited Bucharest, Istanbul, Soviet Union, Germany, China, Japan, Belgium, Rome, Paris, England, France, Scandinavia, the Caribbean and Acapulco. A memorial service will be held at 11 am Friday, May 31, 2013, at St. Barnabas on the Desert Church, 6715 N Mockingbird Lane, Scottsdale, AZ 85253, conducted by Fr. Phil Carlson. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ms. Manchester may be made to St. Barnabas on the Desert Foundation or Deering High School Carolyn Manchester Scholarship Fund, attn: Libby Heselton, 370 Stevens Avenue, Portland, ME 04103.
