87, a native of Chandler, AZ, passed away on December 27, 2013. Dean was born on August 16, 1926 to Dio Delbert Griffith and Myrtle Harriet Hunsaker, the second youngest of five sons and one daughter. A family of early Chandler pioneers, Dean was raised in Chandler and attended Chandler schools until he joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. During World War II, Dean was stationed aboard the USS Braxton transport ship. In 1949, while working as the manager of the Chandler swimming pool, Dean met Dorothy Jean Cantrell. They married in 1950 and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 1, 2013. Dean and Jean are the parents of three daughters Diane Griffith (KJ); Debra Wells (Earle); Jayne Urbina (Parris). They have 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. For 36 years, Dean worked as a field engineer with the Soil Conservation Service, surveying many of the farms in both Chandler and Queen Creek. In 1983, he became manager of the Queen Creek Irrigation District supervising all CAP water distribution for the district, retiring in November 2011. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 17817 South McQueen Road in Chandler. The family will receive visitors from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM with services to follow at 10:00 AM.
