Halderman, Donald E.
Donald E. Halderman, 92, passed away peacefully at home January 15, 2014. Don was born in Logansport, Indiana June 21, 1921 to parents Verne and Maude Halderman. Don graduated from Logansport High School where he lettered in basketball. He received a scholarship to play basketball for Lawrence Tech in Michigan, but after the attack on Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 17, 1941. He took part in the pacific theater where he participated in the first offensive strike against Japan at Guadalcanal and the landing at Iwo Jima. He was wounded 20 days into that battle and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, Don moved to Arizona and made it his home for the rest of his extraordinary life. Don is survived by his wife of 65 years Margaret, son and caregiver Gary, daughter Trudy Drypolcher, her husband Bill, grandsons Steve and Joe and nephews Jon Hershberger and Larry Huntsinger. Plus some of his many friends he made throughout his lifetime. Don was the best friend a person could have. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2014 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024 (Cave Creek to Pinnacle Peak Rd., East on Pinnacle Peak Rd. 1/4 mile), followed by a Celebration of Life at La Siena, 909 E. Northern, Phoenix.
