Simpson, Dr. James L.
73, of Sun City, AZ., fell asleep in death April 26, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sheryl Ann Hurban Simpson. He leaves behind a brother, Ronald Simpson of Sun City, AZ.; a brother, Larry Simpson of Wausaukee, WI; a sister, Doris Shubert of Coleman, WI.; as well as nieces and nephews. Born in La Porte, Indiana, Jim grew up in Wausaukee, Wisconsin. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, attended Oklahoma University for his master's degree, and finished his doctorate at Indiana University in 1969, specializing in exercise physiology. His love of teaching earned him positions at Southern Arkansas University, Tulane University, North Central College in Naperville, Illinois where he met his wife, and the University of Bridgeport, CT. After moving to Arizona in 1981, he taught in the Maricopa Community College District and retired from the Phoenix Union High School District in 1998. Jim's greatest love of teaching involved Bible education as an active minister with Jehovah's Witnesses. In CT. he expanded his ministry to include free studies for prison inmates and also became an interpreter for the deaf community. Jim served as an elder in various congregations in CT. and in AZ., most recently with the Desert Harbor Congregation of Peoria. He has now fulfilled the Bible's words at 2Tim 4:7, "I have fought the fine fight, I have run the course to the finish, I have observed the faith." While Jim was an avid runner and athlete, he will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity, his loyalty to Jehovah God, and his tender heart. He will be greatly missed. He has requested that his family and friends put faith and trust in his favorite passage from the Bible, Revelation 21:3-5.
