The Reverend E. Thomas Leyba, 85, Episcopal priest, hospital chaplain, counselor, husband and father died Tuesday, March 5, in Scottsdale, AZ. Rev. Leyba was born in Denver, CO and grew up in Phoenix, AZ. He earned his masters of divinity at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a bachelor's degree in business administration and masters of counseling at Arizona State University. Before starting his life in ministry, he was a weather forecaster in the U.S. Air Force. Rev. Leyba was ordained Deacon on June 14, 1959 and Priest on December 20, 1959, the first to be ordained under the newly formed Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. He served in various missions and was the Chaplain at St Luke's Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ until his retirement in 1988. Rev. Leyba is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen, and daughter Heather Hoffart (husband Terry). He was predeceased by son, Thomas D. L. Leyba. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 10:00am at St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
