Memorial services for Mr. Eugene O. Groat, age 99, of Lindale, Texas are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 19, 2014 in the Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Garrison and Rev. Byron Howard officiating. Services are under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Directors in Lindale, Texas. Mr. Groat died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the Hospice of East Texas Homeplace in Tyler. He was born on a farm near Melvin, Michigan on September 30, 1914 to the late Claude and Ida (Osborne) Groat. He was raised on that farm with the family later moving to Lansing, Michigan. Mr. Groat attended Michigan State University and graduated as an accountant and began his working career, married and raised his family there in Lansing. After 20 years, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan where he took a management position with a major bank. He retired from the bank moving to Sun City, Arizona, where he lived until 1995 when he moved to the Hideaway and Lindale area to be closer to his family. Mr. Groat was a member of the Hideaway Lake Community Church, the Saint's Alive Sunday school class and later, when he moved to Wesley House in Lindale, became a member of Central Baptist Church. He was also proud to be a member for 50+ years of the Gideons International organization. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Roberta May Groat; second wife, Ruth Naomi Groat; and son, Robert Groat. Mr. Groat is survived by 2 sons & daughters-in-law, Dennis & Nancy Groat of Hideaway, Texas and Douglas & Sandra Groat of Kalamazoo, Michigan; his daughter & son-in-law, Trish & Dr. Richard Bruga of Davis, California; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
