Hickey, Gene
91, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Cookville, Tennessee, on January 12, 1923, to Virgil Thomas Hickey and Bettie Lou (Elrod) Hickey. He is preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters and Ruby Mae (Jaco) Hickey, his wife of 58 years. As a WWII Veteran, Gene served for 3 years with the US Army. After learning plumbing as a trade, post WWII, he moved to Arizona in 1948, and shortly thereafter began and developed Hickey's Plumbing before moving on to many other successful business ventures such as Central Construction Company, land development and First American National Bank, where he served as chairman of the board for many years. Gene was also very civic minded, contributing to the community of Chandler by serving on various boards including Chandler Chamber of Commerce, Chandler Community Hospital and Chandler First Church of the Nazarene. Gene and Ruby Hickey raised their three children, Mike, Linda and Greg, in Chandler. After the passing of his first wife, Gene married Jan Gilchrist, and with that union added Jan's son, Jason, his wife, Jody and their four children. Gene is survived by his wife, Jan Hickey, his children, Mike (Sandra) Hickey, Linda (Brian) Pace, Greg (Kathy) Hickey and Jason (Jody) Gilchrist, his grandchildren, Brent, Andrew, Matt, Lisa, Kerry, Tyler, Ashley, Jacob, Jessica, Julee and Jennifer, 14 great-grandchildren and siblings Bill, Bob and Bea. Above all, Gene's love of God and family were the essence of his being. A visitation will be held 6-8 PM, Wednesday, April 16 at Bueler Chandler Mortuary, 14 W. Hulet Dr., Chandler, AZ 85225. Funeral services begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 17 at Chandler First Church of the Nazarene, 301 N. Hartford St., Chandler, AZ 85225. Donations may be made in Gene's name to Chandler Christian Academy, 301 N. Hartford St., Chandler, AZ 85225.
