George Anthony "Tony" Ward Obituary
Ward, George Anthony "Tony"
age 89, passed away on July 2, 2014. He was born February 27, 1925, in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England to Francis Hugh Ward and Myee Chance Ward. Later that year the family moved to Vancouver, B.C., and in 1932 Tony went to live with his Grandparents in Sidney, Australia. He was admitted to the Royal Australian Naval Academy in 1939 as a Cadet Midshipman. At the outbreak of WWII he left Australia to be with his mother who was living in Stamford, CT and became a US citizen in 1942. He attended Tabor Academy in Marian, Massachusetts, graduating in 1943. Tony served with the Army in the South Pacific during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. Tony went on to Yale College and graduated in 1950. He then joined the Stamford Trust Co. in Stamford, Connecticut, until 1955 when he joined the First National Bank in Pompano, Florida. Ever the banker, he moved to Tucson in 1960 to join the Arizona Bank retiring in 1985 as Vice President of the International Department. He was involved in several community service organizations during his lifetime including the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, Valley Big Brothers (Board President), Florence Crittenden Home (Board President) and the Western Art Association at the Phoenix Art Museum. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. He was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend of 37 years Phyllis J. Ward. He is survived by his brother David Ward, four children: Wendy Bolz, Timothy Ward, Geoffrey Ward and Susan Muir, all of South Florida, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his loyal friend, Barbara Leonard. A memorial serviced will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 10:00 am at Christ Church of the Ascension, 4015 East Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, Arizona, 85253. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Christ Church in his memory
