Harry Walter Ekstrom, 91, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of nearly 61 years, Lillian. He is also survived by his children, Thomas (Millie), Shirley Reimbold (John), Harry (Cathy), Kenneth (Christine), Elaine Ekstrom and Eric (Julie); 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Ekstrom was a proud WWII US Army veteran who served with the 893rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He participated in the allied invasion of Normandy and landed at Omaha Beach in June of 1944 as well as the Battle of the Bulge later that winter. He was a Silver Star Medal recipient recognized for his bravery and heroism. He returned home to Chicago, IL where he served on Engine Company #81 of the Chicago Fire Department for 26 years before retiring to Arizona. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 4PM to 8PM at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel located at 6500 E. Bell Road. Funeral Service to be held at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel at 10:30AM on Monday, April 28, 2014, followed by interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Road.
