Jack Michie, 86, a retired educator, passed away on April 12, 2013, in Scottsdale, Ariz., of respiratory failure after a short illness. He is believed to have been born in Lexington, Ky., on or about July 1, 1926, and was raised in Ohio and W.Va. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He earned a BA from the University of Calif. in 1952, an MA in Admin. and Clinical Psychology from Long Beach College in 1954, and a Doctorate in Vocational Education and College Admin. from UCLA in 1968. His career began in 1952 as a vo-tech instructor at Whittier High School in Whittier, Calif., where he was noted for the number of industrial arts awards his students won from Ford Motor Company. He held positions at all levels in the Calif. school system, and was the director of the largest manpower training center in the U.S. at the East Bay Skills Center in Oakland, Calif. In 1968, he was appointed to the Dept. of Health Education and Welfare National Advisory Council on Vocational Education. In the 1970s, he served as the Executive Director of the Alabama State Advisory Council on Vocational Education, the Michigan State Director of Vocational Education, and Associate Commissioner at the Dept. of Health Education and Welfare in Wash., D.C. He was then Dean of Vocational Technology at Long Beach City College, and Vice-Pres. at Chaffey College in Upland, Calif., before he retired to Arizona in 1979. After retirement, he continued to be involved in business and educational activities, including serving on the faculty and as a consultant for Arizona State University. He won many awards for outstanding achievement in his profession. Dr. Michie was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy ("Chappo"), of thirty-four years in 2005 and her son Jere Beauchamp in 2012. He is survived by his son Jack F. Michie and wife Lee of Yorba Linda, Calif., her children Shelley and Stephen, and Shelley's daughters Amanda and Elizabeth; Chappo's daughter Jeannie Beauchamp Adwani of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jere Beauchamp's wife Linda of Tampa, Florida, and their children Paul, Michel, and Peter; Paul's children Veronica and Stephen, and Michel's daughter Gillian; Dr. Michie's sister JoAnn Radosevic of Visalia, Calif. and his half-brother Henry Arthur ("Skip") Voight of Wheeling, W.Va. A memorial service will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Phoenix, Ariz., date to be announced, arrangements entrusted to Dr. Michie's long-time friend Dick Warneka, who can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
