82 of Scottsdale died on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Scottsdale Health Care Hospital with his wife, Darlene by his side. Services will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, September 26th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 3110 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. Visitation will be from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Wednesday evening at Green Acres. Jim was born September 15, 1931 in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of William and Mary (Parsons) Heberling. The family moved to Pennsylvania when Jim was two and at the age of fourteen he moved to Central Point, Oregon. He graduated from Central Point High School and entered the military. Jim served his country proudly in the United State Marines for four years and then served in the United States Army National Guard for thirty-three years. During his Army career he lived in Lebanon, Oregon and retired in 1986. After retirement he went to Africa and drilled water wells for the African people for three years. He created the Polytechnic School to teach the African men how to repair the water wells. After returning to the United States in 1989 he moved to Arizona and worked for TRW where he met his best friend, Darlene Cole. They were married on February 14, 1993 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Jim was very involved with his church in Oregon working with the youth group and at Holy Cross he served on several boards. He helped his wife with Vacation Bible School for many summers and was head of the Missions at Holy Cross. Also, he was a volunteer paramedic, firefighter and ambulance driver for 12 years in Lebanon, Oregon. He enjoyed playing pinochle, working with his church, football, spending time at their cabin in Payson and traveling with Darlene by land, sea and air. He has traveled 49 states in their motor home and cruised to Hawaii for his and Darlene's 20th Anniversary. Jim loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Jim was loved and respected by his family and friends and will always be remembered for his infectious laughter and smile. He will be missed dearly! Jim is survived by his wife of 20 years, Darlene; son, Frank (Deb), of Jacksonville, Oregon, Step-Daughter, Valerie Tichenor (Mark), Step-Son, Douglas Cole (Lisa) both of Scottsdale; eight grandchildren; Trinity and Meleah (Cameron) of Sublimity, Oregon, Bryan (Bree) of Tempe, Justin of Scottsdale, Krystina (Lee), Chase and Elizabeth of San Diego, California and Jordan of Waterford, Connecticut. Seven Great Grandchildren and two brothers, Bill (Carolyn), John (Elizabeth) and sister, Jane (Dick) and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his son David. Memorials may be directed to Holy Cross Lutheran Church for distribution to Connecting Generations Ministries, Military Bible Sticks and East African Christian Ministries.
