O'Brien, James (Jim) Eugene
Age 79, was born June 25, 1934 in Bronx, New York and passed away peacefully on October 26, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jim was raised in City Island, New York. After high school, Jim became a world traveler with the U.S. Navy. He served most notably on the USS Cassin Young. In 1959, Jim met the love of his life, Cathy Hughes. They were married in 1960 and spent 51 glorious years together. Jim enjoyed a long career with American Airlines first in New York and then in Phoenix. Jim's second career was as a teacher's aide for special needs students in the Scottsdale Unified School District. Jim was one of the founders of the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped now known as STARS (Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services). Jim served on the Board of Directors for many years and was a devoted contributor and volunteer. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cathy, his parents John and Kathryn, his brothers John and Gerald, his sisters, Patricia Hagerty (Richard) and Elizabeth Lenehan. He is survived by his sister, Maureen O'Brien, his son Sean, his daughter, Eileen McLane, son-in-law Chuck McLane, his grandsons, Brendan, Connor and Nolan, his sisters-in-law Teresa O'Brien and Rosemary Conklin (Jack), brothers-in-law John Lenehan and John Hughes (Hannah), his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center for their support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to those agencies that were dear to Jim's heart, most notably STARS (starsaz.org), or Special Olympics Arizona (specialolympicsarizona.org).
