Lay, James S.
James S. Lay, 91, of Sun City West, passed away May 8, 2013. He was born in Owensboro, KY on April 7, 1922, son of George and Lucille (Stone) Lay. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Rubley Lay, sister, Nancy Conklin (her husband Bruce and their sons David, Daniel and Kurt) of Michigan and many extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother George R Lay. He grew up in Michigan, where he worked for Buick Motor Division, Flint, MI and entered the military service in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in WWII. Serving in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star-Valor, Purple Heart with Cluster, Distinguished Unit Badge with Cluster, Bronze Arrowhead, Belgium Fouragere, Militaire Order of William (Holland) and Three Theater Ribbons. Married Mary Rubley in 1950 (Battle Creek, MI) He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Agriculture (1951) and received a Pharmacy degree from Ferris Institute (1954) and attended Brooking Institute (1973). He had an illustrious career with Eli Lily & Co which spanned 33 years. Served as Director California Grain and Feed. He founded the Fresno Agriculture Roundtable and Agriculture Legislative intern program. He is listed in the Who's Who of California as the first recipient of the Western Agriculture Lifetime Award. He was active in the Sun City West Posse, Arizona Rotary Club, Sun Health Foundation, Del Webb Hospital Board of Directors, Masons, community committees and his church. Active in Military Officers Association of America and Sun City West Rotary Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Purple Heart and member of Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame (2005). Memorial Service will be held in his honor at 1:30pm on Saturday, June 1st at Grandview Terrace 14515 W Granite Valley Dr Sun City West, AZ.
