Janet L. (Jan) Garthe passed away on December 26, 2013. She was 81 and died of heart failure. Jan was born to Donald and Dorothy Hollowell, March 4, 1932, in Kokomo, Indiana. She was a 1950 graduate of Suttons Bay (Michigan) High School and married her high school sweetheart, Philip, in Ann Arbor on September 30, 1950. When her husband obtained his engineering degree from Purdue University in 1956, the family moved to Howell, Michigan near his employment at General Motors Milford Proving Ground. In 1959, they moved to Mesa, Arizona when her husband transferred to the General Motors Desert Proving Ground near there. After her children grew up, she did volunteer work in a Mesa hospital, followed by being secretary of her church. She was later employed as a real estate office manager, retiring in 1987. She and her husband were active in their various churches with the latest project being the building of a 57-rank pipe organ for King of Glory Church. They were members of the American Guild of Organists and part-time representatives for the Wicks Pipe Organ Company. Early on, Jan enjoyed bowling, sewing and her volunteer work but later limited her activities primarily to homemaking, reading, puzzle solving, computer games and participating in events at her senior retirement community. (For a change of pace, she and Phil moved to Oregon in 1996 and then back to Mesa in 2010). Survivors include her two sons, Philip Jr. of Rescue, CA and Dave of Glendale, AZ, two daughters, Susan Garthe and Deborah Cautard of Seattle, WA, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions (and in lieu of flowers) may be made to King of Glory Church organ fund in Tempe, AZ.
